Fashion Styling Myths Debunked

Myth: be clash conscious
It’s a common misconception that even the most knowledgeable fashion worshipers subscribe to: Don’t give into the hype. Mixing what are typically thought to be clashing colors can actually make quite the fashion statement. Maybe the only time you think of red and pink making a harmonious duo is during Valentine’s Day. Actually, one of this season’s hard-hitting trends is color-blocking, and it’s accomplished most effectively by wearing solid bold colors together. Avoid trying to pull off this trend with prints that would distract the eye away from your clever color combo.

Myth: avoid mixing prints
Throw all your previous notions about mixing prints out the door. It’s no longer thoughts of as a messy or thoughtless fashion choice… as long as you’re smart about the mixing and matching. Don’t believe me? The runways are doing the talking, seen during some of Fall 2011/12’s most innovative shows including Proenza Schouler, Thakoon and Marc Jacobs.

Generally the trend is worn most effectively by mixing a bolder print along with something a bit more subtle. Mixing florals with stripes is a great way to start experimenting with the trend. When you feel comfortable, try something a more adventurous like pairing an animal print against polka dots.

Try it on for size: choose the Benetton red and black Fair Isle zip-up with it’s larger pattern and pair it with the v-neck Fair Isle navy sweater. The size difference in the pattern’s concentration is what makes it a wearable balance. Get a little wild by mixing the plaid tweed vest with the multi-colored Fair Isle cardigan with fur trim.

Myth: shorts are reserved for summer
For some, it’s hard to cope with the idea that winter months may give way to more modest ensembles, potentially camouflaging the perfect yoga legs that you spend all year perfecting. Well, good news is on the horizon. While you will no longer be able to wear your favorite chino shorts or seersuckers, there is a place for the appropriate style of shorts during the winter months. This season shorts are featured in a wide variety of weightier fabrics that will work well when pairing with your heavier blazers and knitwear. Look for fabrications like corduroy, tweed, wool and velvet.

Try it on for size: look seasonally appropriate by pairing your shorts with tights. Don’t be afraid to get a little adventurous with a deep bordeaux, slate grey or emerald green pair. To keep things timely, make sure to choose a closed toe pump or bootie, and avoid anything open toed at all costs. Complete the look by scrunching a knit sock in a complimentary color.

Myth: sequins are for evening and holiday only
Year after year, the holiday season comes and we stock up on whimsical baubles, sequins and metallics only to shelve them until next year’s go around or a night out on the town. It’s now suitable to break out the glitter at any time of day, and you can even make it office appropriate! Try taking your favorite sequined skirt and pairing it with a soft oversized knit sweater. If the sweater casually cascades off of one of your shoulders – all the better. Pairing the decidedly decadent with the overtly casual will strike the perfect balance.

Try it on for size: mix sequins for the workplace with gender neutral pieces from your wardrobe like a double breasted menswear inspired blazer or a chambray button down. Benetton offers a complete selection of tweed blazers and cozy knitwear that can be effortlessly pair with your glitzy pieces.
