Born in Odessa, Ukraine, in 1925, Pablo Korschenewski arrived in Argentina in 1948 and five years later he settled in Patagonia, where he worked in the coal mine of Río Turbio, in the extreme southwest portion of Santa Cruz. As a result of all his journeys across the Patagonian territory, he conceived the idea of preserving and disseminating the knowledge of the past. With a group of friends he formed the Círculo Río Turbio (Río Turbio Circle) and together they set up a museum and a library specifically relating to the history of carboniferous development to the present time. Pablo Korschenewski founded the Provincial Regional Museum of Río Gallegos, to which he contributed with material obtained in expeditions run at his own expense. His activity in the field of museology led him to learn the tecniques of lithic art, with which the Indians of southern Patagonia used to carve different pieces of stone. In the sixties he moved to Puerto Madryn, in the province of Chubut, where he lived for the rest of his life.
