called chabolas in 32 settlements scattered around Madrid, Spain. The largest of these informal settlements, El Salobral, is situated along the highway to Andalucia to the south of the city (the first shacks were built here in 1981, and the settlement now covers 20 hectares).

A 2001 survey placed the number of families in El Salobral at 224, but locals say there are more than 300 families, or 1,500 people. Though there is no water supply, sewer system, public lighting, telephone service, or public transportation, El Salobral is constantly growing.
